Lev Goldberg, a Toronto-based long-distance swimmer, has made history by becoming the first transgender person to swim across Lake Huron. This remarkable feat, which took him 29 hours and 43 minutes, was a testament to his dedication and resilience. The swim, which was accompanied by a boat and two safety observers, was a challenging endeavor, with waves reaching four feet and winds of up to 20 knots. The experience was so demanding that Goldberg described it as his brain dreaming while his body was moving, with hallucinations and a distorted sense of time.
Goldberg's achievement is all the more significant given the current political climate surrounding transgender people's rights to play sports. He expressed his pride in being a story of trans joy and accomplishment, emphasizing the rarity of such achievements. Only seven people, including Goldberg, have ever completed ratified swims across Lake Huron, making him the fourth person to complete this particular route and the second man to do so.
The swim was also a fundraising success, with Goldberg partnering with LGBT Youthline to raise money for vulnerable queer and trans young people. The operating costs for the swim were fully covered, and all contributions made will go directly to the organization. The event raised over $7,000 last year, and Goldberg is hopeful to match or exceed that contribution this year.
Looking ahead, Goldberg has ambitious plans for the future. He aims to swim all five Great Lakes within five years, with a specific goal of a 48 to 50-hour swim in the next one to three years. This achievement not only showcases his physical prowess but also highlights the importance of representation and visibility for transgender individuals in sports.
